Geraldton Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP)

The Geraldton Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP) is a major infrastructure program being delivered by Mid West Ports Authority to modernise Geraldton Port and expand its capacity to meet forecast growth in regional exports.

Located within the existing Port of Geraldton precinct on Western Australia’s Mid West coast, the project comprises a series of marine and landside infrastructure upgrades designed to improve operational efficiency, increase export capacity and support long-term trade growth. The project is funded by the Western Australian Government with an investment of approximately $350 million and is being delivered over a multi-year program of works.

Once complete, PMaxP is expected to increase the Port of Geraldton’s throughput capacity from approximately 15–16 million tonnes per annum to around 25 million tonnes per annum, supporting expanding mining, grain and emerging trade sectors across the Mid West region.

Scope PMaxP comprises a coordinated program of marine and landside works designed to increase port capacity, improve operational reliability and modernise existing infrastructure. Key elements include:

  • Demolition and reconstruction of existing berth infrastructure
  • Dredging, reclamation and marine works within the port development area
  • Construction of a new surge protection breakwater
  • Relocation of tug harbour and associated marine facilities
  • New bulk materials handling infrastructure including truck unloading facilities
  • Installation of conveyors, ship loading systems and associated port services
  • Upgrades to port operations infrastructure and supporting facilities

Agilitus role Agilitus was appointed by Mid West Ports Authority in October 2022 to provide engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services for the Geraldton Port Maximisation Project. Under this appointment, Agilitus provides multidisciplinary engineering and project delivery capability supporting the planning and execution of the PMaxP program. Working as the client’s delivery partner, Agilitus supports the project through integrated engineering coordination, procurement management and construction management activities within the broader EPCM delivery framework.

Brownfields implementation & management The works are being delivered within an operating port environment requiring careful planning of construction staging, logistics and operational interfaces to maintain ongoing trade during delivery.

Ground engineering Since award, our Ground Engineering team has completed scoping, onshore and nearshore investigations to facilitate design. We have assisted with the management of the site works associated with PMax to ensure they are delivered safely to the required quality and schedules. We have prepared designs for IFC status for a new multiuser storage shed, the demolition and redevelopment of Berths 1 and 2 and a new conveyor network. During the design phase we worked closely with our Ports and Marine engineers to eliminate interface challenges which can result at soil structure interface.
